As much as I enjoy using Postcrossing Forum, it’s faster to just click “send a postcard” on the regular Postcrossing site, or its imitator, Postcard United. I happen to prefer the latter, and I have clicked a few times…

Hey Postcard Designers: Leave Room for Stamps! Sent to Austria, China, Germany, Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, Taiwan, & the U.S.

We’ll get to the “room for stamps” bit shortly, but first: 17 postcard sends represented this time, so let’s get to it!

I clicked on “send a postcard” on Postcard United! This California map is bound for Longhua, Shenzhen, China. A second click sends another copy of the card to a map lover in Ipoh, Perak, Malaysia.

This octopus is attacking the San Diego Central Library. One thing to know if you are a postcard lover: the Friends of the Library store here is a great place to go postcard shopping! I sent this one out to a post pal in Hawaii.

San Diego Public Library ToshWerks

Another copy of the card is going out in a Postcrossing Forum library tag to a recipient in Ningbo, Zhejiang, China. Sadly, the design of the card’s back does not leave much room for anything larger than the smallest of domestic first-class stamps. No room for a larger stamp (like our round international stamps, among any number of others); no room for multiple stamps; no room for the postmark, which so often obscures a sizable chunk of real estate on the back of a postcard.  It would be nice, wouldn’t it, if the people designing the address side of cards were also people who send & receive postcards, themselves.

I recently popped into the Charles M. Schulz Museum, on the way home from somewhere else, just long enough to do a little postcard shopping! Poor Charlie Brown is going to a Postcrosser in Gunma, Japan.

I also bought this new postcard, one copy of which is on its way to East Jakarta, Indonesia.

Let’s Just Agree to Ignore One Another: Sent to Hong Kong, Indonesia, Japan, Poland, & Thailand

A mere 10 postcards this time! What’s the story with the title? We’ll get to it, but not too much into it–later.

Elephant & Piggie are going to Asahikawa, Hokkaido, Japan.

Hawaii 571

The recipes from a box of cake flour went to Niigata, Japan. Do you ever try the recipes on a food package? I have, from packages of chocolate chips & cocoa powder. I heard from the card’s recipient, and she does not cook anything from the recipes printed on food packages.

Off to Bangkok, Thailand, in a “marine life & sea creatures” tag, goes this sun star from the Monterey Bay Aquarium. I tell the card’s recipient I enjoy visiting aquariums when I travel, and have been to her local, Sea Life Bangkok Ocean World.

postcard 343a

Piedras Blancas Lighthouse goes to Saitama, Japan. I go to the area often, but never to the lighthouse; in fact, I just learned you can get a tour! For me, the draw of Piedras Blancas is the thousands of elephant seals. As it happens, on the very day I wrote this postcard, I took a little day trip down there to see the current denizens of the beach.

California Coast Highway 1 with Piedras Blancas Lighthouse

Far, far north of Piedras Blancas are Northern California & its coastal redwoods. This card goes out by request to a Postcrosser in Lublin, Poland, who noted, “blank in an envelope, please.” I’ll ignore that like she ignored my notation that I send my cards stamped and written, as the snail mail gawdz intented. And as I suspected, her “profile”is nothing but a list of cards she wants.

Coast Redwoods rock

For a food tag, this goes to Jakarta, Indonesia. I may have already mentioned that this vegetarian Chinese restaurant in San Francisco’s Chinatown isn’t the best representation of its genre–but I sure liked getting free postcards!

This cool Totoro card should end up in New Taipei City, Taiwan.

Before stamps, stickers, & washi tape, let’s look into my Postcrossing Forum U2U inbox. I just got a thank you from an earlier send to Taichung City, Taiwan, with a little museum report:

Thank you so much for the beautiful cards! They arrived at the same time 😀 We don’t have a lot of museums in Taiwan. There are two in my hometown, the science and art museums. But the museums are small and do not have a lot of works contained. I once took my foreign friend there and she said it was boring compared to those in her country. Thank you for always using great stamps 😀 Have a great day!

A Criminal with an Empty Space: Received from Germany, Japan, Netherlands, & Singapore

It’s been a good couple of days for postcards!

POSTCARD632a

Pingu & friends as the upper left came to me from Tokyo, Japan, as part of a Postcrossing Forum “what did you do today?” tag trade.  This trader went to some toy stores, shopping for her nephew’s 3rd birthday.  He wanted a red light saber, and she is quite worried he may fall into the dark side.  Scroll down, and you will see part of the back of the card.  I really like the happy little red mountain, with the bright sun & swirling sea.  Also, there’s the lady on the stamp, who reminds me of the super-old U.S. comics character, Emmy Lou.

What a cool beer ad!  That is from a regular Postcrossing draw, and it came to me from Mosbach, Germany (9 days; 5,732 miles).  The sender tells me hers is a hilly, rural area near Heidelberg, “a world-known city for tourists and students.  You can meet there a lot of American and Japanese people.”

Those weird creatures Fred & Ed are rescued from what seems to be some sort of candy package, and they were created by a swap-bot memeber in Lelystad, Netherlands, for an “upcycled cardboard” trade. This is one special card.  Scroll down to the card right below my writing, and you will see what I mean: absolutely covered with text, and drawings, and very unusual stamps.  The two stamps on the right are a hard plastic material, with the right-most one having a black-and-white image of a building, overlaid with a golden facade.  The stamp right next to that depicts and ice skater–and when I tilt the postcard to & fro, I can watch the skater skate!  WHOA!  Now, I am fond of my country’s Charlie Brown Christmas stamps–but they don’t move!  You’ll see the sender has drawn a “criminal with an empty space,” a reference to my swap-bot profile, which notes my view that empty space on the back of a postcard seems criminal.

Another Postcrossing card at bottom left, the Gardens by the Bay in Singapore.  It took 10 days to travel the 8,469 miles to get to me, and the sender asks if I’ve visited the just-about-to-close UnderWater World (about to shutter due to competition from a newer, bigger aquarium attraction).  I have, indeed.  There were parts I loved, and one thing that disturbed me: performing dolphins. These gorgeous Indo-Pacific humpbacked dolphins, like much of UnderWater World’s stock, are being sent on to an attraction in China. By the way, if you love dolphins, killer whales, and other cute cetaceans, as I do, I highly recommend the films The Cove and Blackfish.

On a more pleasant note: Spirited Away!  It’s from a Postcrosser in Kitami, Hokkaido, Japan, part of a Studio Ghibli-related tag trade.  Beautiful stamps on the back, check out the last attached image.

Keep Calm & Go Ride a Dog House: Sent to China, Japan, & Taiwan

All 3 cards in this batch are off in Postcrossing Forum tag trades, and the first goes to a Snoopy lover in Linluo, Taiwan.  Here’s the World War I Flying Ace, heading off overseas with the most leg room possible this side of First Class!

postcard543

The two “Keep Calm” cards are off in Forum trades that are related to wish lists, and both of the recipients wished for “Keep Calm” postcards.  The mailbox goes to Zhejiang, China, and the tree is headed for Hokkaido, Japan.

A Great Day for Postcards! Received from Canada, China, & Japan

So much joy in my mailbox, all at once!  Look at all of this:

2016-05-05 01.27.45

The raccoon card came to me via Postcrossing, from a class of 2nd graders in Ontario, Canada.  The child who wrote it tells me:

“Hi!  Our favorite holiday is Mother’s Day.  This is how we celebrate our moms.  Our favorite sports are singing, dancing and soccer.  Canada is a free country.  We get to choose what we get to be.  Take care!!”

I told them that my favorite holiday is Spring Forward, and I was not making that up.

The other two cards are via Postcrossing Forum trades.  The Studio Ghibli card–Howl’s Moving Castle, to be precise–came from Hokkaido, Japan, and the sender writes:

“What is your most favorite Ghibli’s anime?  I like Princess Mononoke most.  🙂  I have some DVDs of Ghibli anime.  And I sometimes watch them.”

“I have some DVDs…and I sometimes watch them.”  I love that; it describes perfectly how I utilize my own home video collection.  A lot of stuff gathering dust.  As for her question, I answered it by saying I veer toward the “cuter” stuff: Ponyo, Borrowers Arrietty, and the amazing Spirited Away.  Do you have a favorite Miyazaki / Studio Ghibli film?

Finally, from Guangzhou, China, there’s that fun Nian Gao pounding postcard.  The sender tells me:

“I want to show you something typical of China.  Chinese New Year is very critical for us, and we will have a union dinner on Eve.  As you see, the people in the picture are making rice cake.”

Stamps & postmarks down below–lots of nice stamps this time, and I am especially loving the jovial monkey!
